In this exclusive interview we will take a peek into the amazing world of Kelly Wearstler’s closet. This is where antique finds and exquisite couture collide, each item bearing a distinct story. The well-known interior designer and style icon has kindly welcomes us into her secret fashion sanctuary and shares her most treasured possessions and the stories behind them.

A modern take on fashion - honouring the past

OV: Kelly, you’re well-known for your daring and unique style in interior design. What influence does your design approach have on the clothes you wear?

KW: I’m flattered. Design is in my opinion an expressive language that cuts across physical boundaries. This idea infuses every aspect of my personal style, which includes well chosen pieces that tell stories, create feelings and reflect the charm of what I consider to be the unexpected.

OV: You have a very creative closet! Please tell us, what method do you use to go about setting up your closet? Are there any classic pieces or must-haves that you just can’t live without?

KW: Sorting through my closet is a creative process. I spend money on items that make me happy and last over time. It is more of a a “buy less and buy smart” approach I would say. I can’t stress enough how important a well-tailored jacket, a statement piece and an eye-catching pair of shoes are. However, a fantastic hat really makes an outfit. It is something not everyone would wear these days, so why not stand out a bit?

OV: What fashion figures or historical periods influence your sense of style?

KW: Definitely. My wardrobe is greatly influenced by daring icons from the 1970s and 1980s, such as Debbie Harry and Bianca Jagger. Their ability to combine refinement and a rebellious edge speaks to me and influences my closet. Also, I am not a fan of the way people jump on the next new trend and changes their style just to “fit in”. The way I look at it, trends can show you new ways of dressing that you never would have tried if it was not shown to you on others. I wear what I like and sometimes it is trendy, sometimes it is not.

Decoding Kelly Wearstler´s closet

OV: Could you take us on a tour of your closet? Are there some items that could describe you and your style?

KW: My wardrobe is in a way a living canvas, and among my most cherished possessions is an antique cowboy. This staple of mine I found many years ago in a vintage store in Los Angeles. This hat perfectly encapsulates my varied taste with its nostalgic charm. I think it infuses a dash of fun into any look, instead of simply just being an accessory.

One of my collection’s other highlights is a Rick Owens top with his recognisable flaring shoulders. The boldness of the shoulders gives an architectural character to the otherwise classic and simple black top, which I think most people with my design background can appreciate.

Looking at designers such as Ottolinger, Rick Owens and Daniel Roseberry, has been a big inspiration for my work. They have such a interesting way of mixing colors, shapes, and materials – I think they would make great interior architects.

Out of all the amazing brands, my Alaïa pieces are the ones I would find difficult to let go of. Unfortunately my closet is not as spacious as it used to be therefore I only keep clothes that I love.  My hope is that my daughter wants to go through her mothers closet when she is older and give the pieces new life.

In terms of shoes; these days, I can’t help but grab for the Dior leather boots that I wore during the Dior SS24 show at Paris Fashion Week’s. These edgy boots are a perfect blend of avant-garde, comfort and refinement. Not to be disregarded, Loewe heels always create a feeling of classy refinement and innovation. I’m a proud owner of multiple pairs of them.

In conclusion, Kelly Wearstler’s expertise in interior design is clearly evident in the creative way she plays with colors, textures, and shapes to create cohesive outfits. After being invited into her closet, it is clear that her selection becomes noticeable as a carefully constructed work of art. She has successfully balances the marriage of modern creativity and timeless nostalgia.

Wearstler’s varied and daring approach to fashion is evident in every piece, whether it’s the avant-garde Dior boots, the Rick Owens shirt inspired by architecture, or the old cowboy hat. These objects are more than just clothes, they serves as an artistic expression for the architect herself. As we close this closet, we are left with glimpses of  innovation and timeless appeal that defies trends and nurture ones genuine self.
