Current Exhibitions in berlin

  1. Edvard Munch: Transforming Nature at the Museum Barberini until 1 April 2024.

This is the first exhibition of landscapes by Edvard Munch and it focuses on his approach to nature.

Edvard Munch viewed nature as a cyclically self-renewing power and also as a reflection of his own inner turmoil. He developed a pantheistic understanding of nature, which he projected onto the forests and coasts of Norway. The dramatic weather depicted in his paintings is especially striking in light of the current climate crisis.

“Transforming Nature” investigates the meaning of such images in Munch’s oeuvre, questioning common assumptions and examining the contemporaneous artistic, scientific, and philosophical influences that contributed to his understanding of nature.

2. Extreme Tension. Art between Politics and Societyat the Neue Nationalgalerie from 18 November 2023 to 28 September 2025.

This exhibition explores the art of the second half of the twentieth century, a period marked by an enormous diversity of materials, mediums, and methods, as well as division, rupture, and transformation. The title “Extreme Tension” reflects the societal tensions and fundamental realignments in visual art caused by events such as the Holocaust, war, upheaval, emancipation, the Cold War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The exhibition takes its point of departure from the radical performance “Zerreißprobe” (Stress Test, 1970) by Günter Brus, a co-founder of the Vienna Actionism, who used this performance to push his own body to the limit. It addresses central artistic and social themes of the twentieth century in 14 sections, including realism and abstraction, politics, and society, the everyday and Pop, feminism, identity, and nature and ecology.
